The Upgrade (Or: Frankenstein PC)

As frequent readers may know, my PC is a source of much sadness. It's now nominally less sad.Baby steps, amirite?

I found two 512MB sticks of PC2700 lying around and they seem to work OK. They passed the Windows Memory Test anyway and nothing's crashed yet. Windows 7 definitely benefits from it. SuperFetch is whoring out ~600MB of it caching stuff.

I've also gotten a 1TB Wester Digital Green harddrive from my brother. There's also a 320GB WD Black harddrive here that I think works, but don't know for sure so I'll have to test it. Both of which would be really nice improvements to my current storage situation. From 200GB to 1,320GB of space.

I'll finally have room to install Visual Studio and screw around with the XNA Game Development kit.

The 4GB USB Flashdrive is there for ReadyBoost which is a surprisingly cool technology available since lolVista.

The only hangup with it is I realized I don't have any SATA cables to hook either up. I wasn't able to get to any stores that sell them at reasonable prices in time either.

But I'll try again on the 2nd, and get two of the things. It should be pretty good.

The difference a cable makes...

If you're playing on PS2, it's pretty amazing how huge an improvement in visual quality you get by hooking the PS2 up to a TV using Component Cables over the RCA/Composite ones. FFXI does 16:9 (except the title screen for some reason), but doesn't support running in 480p mode.

I popped in Star Ocean: Til the End of Time which does and got it running in 480p mode. It's quite pretty looking. If I could figure out how the hell to save I'd turn it off though because I don't really feel like playing it. I hate all the characters and I'm only ~30 minutes into it. Seriously, I want to kill everyone who talks in this game with fire.

I also got an HD box in from Comcast and that's supposed to be activated now after 30 minutes on the phone with them in about 45 minutes when it finishes doing whatever its doing. Perhaps coincidentally, I kind of want to kill Comcast with fire.

I also picked up Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. King Abbadon. It has to be the longest title of any game, EVAR. Known in certain keeps as "Colon Cancer." The guys did a Quick Look of it during the Persona 4 Endurance Run and it looked pretty damned strange, but interesting. I'll probably end up liking it and then need to try and find a copy of the first one. As I understand it in SMT: DS2: RKVSKA you can kill Jack Frost with fire. Which sounds like fun.

So.... Um.... What's next?

I know it'll be about three more months until we get another update, if not longer, but...does anyone know what's coming? I'm not up to date on my WotG Missions/Quests, so I don't know what's going on with that, but haven't heard anything on SE's plans at all.

Black Mage updates? (lol)

Monk updates? (lol)

New avatars? (LOL!!!!!!!!)

The Mini-expansions are done, is anything planned next? Well, besides FF14?

I mean I'm all for the hilarious potential of massive botting bans, but schadenfreude only provides pretty brief entertainment.

Speak up, Square-Enix.

It hurts all over; Leveling Ranger; and Job Updates... (Also, 16:9)

It's been about two weeks, but it was finally both warm outside (about 50F) and my hip feels 100% better, so I went running again yesterday.

It turns out the amount of time needed to get your body not used to running again is about two weeks. Everything hurts today. Well, all the stuff that moves while running anyway.

If I hadn't been running I'd be worried I was getting the flu. There's some muscle on my back that freaking hurts. It's kind of ridiculous.

Ranger Ahoy!

I think I'm going to actually go and try to level Ranger again today. It's been quite a while (I hit 53 in August, it's 57 still), but I think shooting things in the face, and then getting eaten, could be fun. Plus it would get rid of some of the armor and ammo I have tying up MH space once I hit the 70s.

I guess I could also level Samurai as a subjob, but I'm not really a fan of it and it's one of three jobs that's still level 1.

Job Updates!

Not FFXI Jobs, but actual ones!

I got a call this morning about one of the many jobs I sent out resumes for! I think it was for a 6-12 month contract as a PC Technician for some company based out of Georgia that's doing stuff in Pennsylvannia for some reason. Sounds like it could be decent resume addition fodder and make some money while finding something a little more permanent (assuming I actually get it).

If nothing else I could really use something approximating a modern PC (Athlon XPs with DDR400 RAM aren't exactly recent). I wrote up a "stuff to buy should somebody actually employ me" thing not too long ago that's still pretty accurate (minus the TV part).

That's about it for now!

Minor update: 16:9!

FFXI along with a few other titles on the PS2 has 16:9 support. So you can have the game fill your widescreen TV without making your characters look like candidate for pre-diabetes.

Strangely, although consistent with the rest of the game really, it isn't enabled on the "flying around Vanadiel" title screen or character selection screen. Neither, of course, is the music/sound settings which makes that screen loud enough to wake the dead.

The bane of my fucking existance.

Who was the idiot who decided that getting 63 of these fish which nobody fishes up on their own and can't be bought from any NPCs would be a good Guild Point idea? Shouldn't that the guy has jars of urine stored by his desk be a good indication he's fucked in the head and shouldn't be put in charge of Guild Points?

Shouldn't the limitations placed on how many fish you can catch in a day and how long it would take to get 63 of these make it seem retarded?

Merry Christmas!

Here at Evilpaul Enterprises™ we enjoyed a nice evening with the family and had a tasty turkey dinner complete with homemade stuffing (by me!). I didn't actually stuff the stuffing into the turkey because that doesn't work well from a not-giving-your-family-food-poisoning-serving-raw-bird or overcooking-the-bejesus-out-of-the-turkey viewpoint, so I guess if I were pretentious I'd call it a "dressing."

Other than that, my brother and I had many lulz repeating Internet memes to each other including this one:I still laugh everytime I see it.

On the X-mas present front, I got a 19" 720p TV. It's much nicer than the slightly larger inch number SDTV it's replacing. For starters, I don't need to beat the hell out of it to make it not be all staticy and shitty because of solder melting from the tuner (or whatever the technical explanation is behind God hating me and my TV).

I asked on about getting component cables to hook up my PS2 (and hopefully, someday, PS3). They let me know that I can indeed use the same cable for both a PS2 and PS3 and a website that sells said cables for less than five bucks. Which is pretty awesome. So I should have a less bad looking PS2 hooked up to my TV in a few days.

On the FFXI front I've been doing mostly nothing for the past two days. A little bit of fishing tonight at Qufim and little else, really. I got .2 skill, so I'm slightly closer to 100. I'm not using my Pelican Ring though as only one of the three fish here can give me skill ups.

I did try to catch Takitaro for another Pelican Ring a few days ago, but even with my Albatross Ring I couldn't get one below 20% stamina before timing out.

Still no news on what's going on with the LS. There's nobody on it and nobody is posting crap on the website lately. /sigh

An Early Christmas Present

I got my first ever Jury Duty notification today!

This is the bestest Christmas Eve EVAR!!!

I've written before about how I felt about the prospect. That is to say with the local police being brigandish pederasts, depraved homosexuals, and horse porn enthusiasts, the local judiciary being Judge Judy wannabes that border on functionally retarded, and that that kind of makes a jury trial pretty pointless. I also wouldn't convict someone who's obviously guilty of a "victimless crime."

And now I've written it to the local courthouse.

I wonder what they'll charge me with for not being enamored with their sick parody of a legal system?

Member Moderators (Or: How to tell if a web forum will suck more than usual.)

It's pretty much inevitable that you'll see flaming anywhere on the Internet that lots of people post their ideas. It happened 20+ years ago on USENET when there were 10 people online and the people actually knew each other offline. Hell, they were down the hall from each other.

It definitely happens more today when people seem to idolize this:Why not be an obnoxious jerkoff to people you don't know who are more intelligent than you for no reason? It's not like they could beat the shit out of you by reaching through your monitor or something.

So, I kind of suspect e-thugs will continue to be around for the forseeable future until reach-through monitor technology arrives (or until I figure out how to kill people using my mind).

How does this tie into why some forums are shittier than others? Member moderators. If you see a forum of modest size that the owners/Administrators can't be bothered to read and/or moderate themselves, it'll be hilariously shitty 9 times out of 10.

Take, for instance,

Not that big a forum.

Only a few sections.

Only a few posters.

Yet there's about a half dozen member moderators. Kind of unnecessary considering there's a dozen plus staff members as well. Shockingly, picking your mods by popularity contest continues to not work very well there.

So with the absentee owners who have no idea what's going on you can have:

1) Flaming of someone for not knowing something.

Didn't know what game Tetsuya Nomura worked on last year? Of course it's OK to call you a fucking retard.

The Member Moderators will comment on how stupid you were too, afterwards. Good enforcement of the forum rules there.

2) Flaming of someone for knowing something you didn't.

Didn't know that the Executive Producer of a series says he's not interested in making it appeal to a wider (including grown adult) audience? Of course it's OK to call someone who did a fucking idiot.

Member Moderators will help settle the situation by deleting posts that aren't flames and personal attacks and leave those that are intact.

Why? Probably because their dainty little feelings were hurt by letting them know Final Fantasy 8 sucks ass.

So you think you can fish? (Part I)

I hit level 80 Fishing earlier and am heading to Windy to hand in a Three-eyed Fish to continue skilling and four Giant Catfish for GP for the day.And I decided to share with you, my three readers, my Fishing related wisdom. It's not all things I came up with on my own, of course. Evil Wiki, BG's Fishing thread, and nitsuj's 1-100 Fishing all provided information and inspiration on the way to 80 Fishing (and hopefully, 100 Fishing with Ebisu someday soon).

The Basics

To fish, you face a body of water (possibly standing in it) with a fishing rod equipped in your Ranged slot and a lure (multi-use) or bait (single bite) and click 'Fish' or type /fish.

Based upon the rod/lure combo and chance you'll either get a "Something bit the line!/!!!" message or "You didn't catch anything."

With experience and either advice from an experienced fisherman or the Wiki, you'll be able to tell what caught your line before attempting to reel it in. More on this later.

With the camera behind you, hold the opposite direction the fish pulls your rod and you'll deplete its stamina. Deplete it fully and hit 'X' or Enter to reel it in. I personally turn the camera facing my character which makes it so you push the direction the fish pulls your rod.

You can do either, it's a matter of personal preference.

Cooking Skill?

Because of sushi's ubiquitousness as the melee food of first resort, regardless of how brilliant that actually is, you'll hear people talk about how well Fishing and Cooking go together. And it's quite true. I've probably made 2/3rds of my gil in the game this way.

You can start the day with 10k gil and finish it with 250k gil from a mixture of AH sales, NPCing fish, etc. Some days are better than others though with bite rates, HQ rates, and just how fast people are buying stuff all can vary heavily.

Having at least 20ish Cooking is also useful for making your own Insect Balls to catch Moat Trout. I don't suggest completing the Lu Shang's Rod quest unless you really want to because you can sell fish and buy one a lot sooner. But Moat Carp are a decent starter skill up fish, so it's handy. More on both of these further down.

The Hardware

If you're serious about starting fishing you'll need to buy a fishing rod.

If you're made of gil, buy a Lu Shang's Fishing Rod. It's the second best in the game. It'll last you all the way to level 100 and lets you target the most profitable fish for skilling up.

If you'd like to start fishing, but don't have 3 million gil lying around your Mog House, then get a Halcyon Rod. It's really the next best thing to a Lu's for smaller fish. Unfortunately, while "big fish" rods do exist they're pretty uniformly terrible and I would avoid wasting my time with them.

The ...Software?

After you've got a Fishing Rod, you're going to need bait or a lure. These are the most significant of the bait you'll run into:
Little worms: About 3 gil from NPCs, they catch small fish in "fresh" waters.

Lugworms: Also about 3 gil from NPCs, they catch small fish in salty water.

Insect Balls: If you watch to catch Carp you'll be using this bait.

Crayfish Balls: If you're after Nebimonites on the Ferry or Sea Serpent Grotto you'll probably use this (if you go with bait).

Sliced Bluetail: The bait of choice for catching Bhefhel Marlins on the Selbina to Mhuara (and back again) Ferry.

Meatballs: These catch the beasts of the Great Deep. If you're catcning badass fish, you're probably using Meatballs.
For those of you who would rather not have to carry around stacks of bait that get consumed every line bite (regardless of what's on the other end with few exceptions), then you'll be mostly using these:
Minnow: Catches a wide variety of fish mostly in salt water.

Sinking Minnow: Catches bottom feeding fish. Works in both fresh and salt water.

Shrimp Lure: Catches a wide variety of fish in salt water. There's some overlap and some exlusion between this and Minnows.

Fly Lure: If you're fishing up something weird in a swamp, giant tree or in the jungle you'll probably be using one of these. Also very useful in frog fishing (which is usually not very useful).
Fishing Skill

Unlike most crafts, Fishing Skill really doesn't do a whole hell of a lot. It makes it so you deplete a fish's stamina more quickly, so you're more likely to be able to reel one in.

But you'll be able to reel in fish that are 50+ levels higher than you with a Lu's (and in some cases a Halcyon). Cone Calamary, for instance, have virtually no "fight" to them, so a level 10 fisherman could reel one in despite them capping at level 48.

And there are some fish, I'm looking at you Shining Trout for my GP last week, that still are annoying to reel in even if you're 50+ levels above their cap because they have a lot of "fight" to them.

Suffice it to say manual dexterity plays a bigger role than Fishing skill in reeling in fish.

Fishing Clothes

If you're borderline sometimes able to reel in a fish, sometimes not, having the added few skill points from Fishing gear can prove useful. Fishing in ToAU areas where fish are generally harder to get out of the water it may be useful.

You'll probably be fine without it though, so it's a Your Mileage May Vary sort of thing.

The only difference between the NQ and HQ is the DEF rating on them if anyone was wondering.

The Guild armor pieces are the same way except the feet give +2 skill instead of +1. The apron reduces the amount of items you'll catch which with items being generally pretty worthless means you may want to pick one up.

Fishing Rings

I'm separating these into a separate section because they're more complicated in effect and to obtain than the Fishing skill+ pieces.

The first pair are the Seagull and Heron Rings from a MMM thing. If you care about MMM, check the link and spam the correct maze for a chance at them. The two provide increase fish stamina reduction/recovery when you have Fishing Guild Support active. These look like they could be handy at lower levels, but you'll do fine without them.

Next, are the Albatross and Penguin Rings. They're rewards for completing the Pirate's Chart and Brigand's Chart quests, respectively. You can get the Rare/Ex items to start the two quests as rewards from Inside the Belly, a quest I'll be covering right after this.

Of the two the only one I'd really recommend pursuing is the Albatross Ring. That's because it's enchantment roughly doubles the amount of time a fish will stay on your line. This will make reeling in fish in ToAU areas (which are very nice for skilling up mid to high levels) much easier. For details on how to obtain it (hint: bring Summoners) read the wiki page linked to above.

Inside the Belly

Since I already mentioned it, there's a quest called Inside the Belly relating to fishing. Specifically, once you hit level 28 the NPC Zaldon at the Fishing Guild in Selbina will offer to gut certain fish for you and then give you small amounts of gil and possibly an item. The item rates are pretty terrible most or all are <10%. the Wiki page for a table of which fish may contain which items. To get Charts for the Rings you'll want Bhefhel Marlins which can be caught on the Ferry with Sliced Bluetail.

Where to skill up...

This is where I'm going to leave it for today. There's plenty of information above for a new fisherman to digest.

If you want to get started today, try using your rod of choice (release "Bad/Terrible feeling" message fish unless you sprung for Lu's) and a Little Worm in pretty much any freshwater in any of the starting cities to catch Crayfish. These cap at level 7.

Alternately, use Insect Balls to catch Moat Carp at most of the same locations. They cap at 11.

Happy angling!

Minor Edit: I changed the sections titles to a blue I think is easier to read (and sticks out a lot more) than the bolded white text that I used elsewhere (mostly the bait/lure info).

One thing to improve in FFXIV...

If there's one thing Square-Enix could improve in FF14, it would be not advertising the sale of things, say Shantotto's Absurd and Retarded Mini-Quest Line That's a Massive Pain in My Ass to Finish, to me if I've already bought Shantotto's Absurd and Retarded Mini-Quest Line That's a Massive Pain in My Ass to Finish.

I remember Blizzard used to do the same thing on Battle.Net in 1998. I don't know if they still do this in whatever Lobby sort of thing WoW has (does it have one?), but if not maybe Squeenix can get on the bleeding edge of advertising and use information they already have about me to target their advertising?

You know, like most people were doing in 1998.

Just sayin'.

Can I borrow a Koenig Shield off somebody?

I farmed up a little more than one stack of slime oil in Korrolocka Tunnel yesterday. Bought some of the other oils from the synergy dude. And headed to Mhuara to the Goldsmithing Guild to buy Yellow Rocks to make Earth Fewell for my Synergy skill ups. Make three stacks, and realize I needed Wind Fewell.

Now I need to either made Wind Fewell and try to sell the Earth Fewell (pro-tip: Nobody buys the shit) or get a Koenig Shield because you can skill up adding Evoliths to those to about 44 skill. Unfortunately, they cost almost 300k. Anyone got one I can borrow for two days? :-P

On the plus side of things, I hit 78 Fishing earlier and am about halfway to the GP needed for the key item. Still 0/145 on the second Rare/Ex item needed from Gugrusaurus though unfortunately.

I don't have a "Square-Enix Account"?

Fuck the FF14 Beta.

In fact, fuck FF14.

And fuck that transexual-Cloud-clone-starring FF13.

Note: Actual transexuals are a little weird, but OK by me. To each their freaky weird own.

Swapping your androgenous zipper and belt smothered character's gender by adding breasts isn't. Using a single fucking 3D model and sticking different hair and clothes on it to make all your characters, young and old, male and female is fucking lazy and pathetic.

If you're going to barely manage one fucking Final Fantasy game per console generation maybe you could at least not copy and paste all the fucking characters, Tetsuya Nomura? I mean sure you get all your designs by tracing people from the JCPenny catalog, but maybe make your minions make it seem like you put in a little effort?(Click to enlarge the modern day palette swap.)

Let's hope SE makes lots of money to crank out some more remakes, Tri-Ace games, and Dragon Quest grind-fests. Hopefully, they'll all manage to pull off that awesomely generic Last Remnant look.

The Chat Filter is a resounding success.

People have been talking lately about SE's chat filter being bypassed by the RMT using leet speak and adding needless punctuation and how that is proof it's poorly implemented. The third party ChatMon add-on sounds much more intelligently designed, but it's being beaten as well. (You could of course be banned for using it to avoid RMT spam /tells too, technically.)

Now some would say these things are proof RMT have overrun the servers and SE is incapable of doing jack shit about it. Those people would be wrong.

Sure, I got about 30 RMT /tells yesterday. Sure, that's fucking annoying. (Since my LS isn't doing squat I rarely get a legitimate /tell anyway.)

But, what's different now: I can't understand a single goddamned one of them.

Seriously, they're all in EnGRISH to start with. Now they have broken 1337 sp34|< in them. And they have some sort of "(a=rm)+ ((sa=BT)]" shit added to the end.

What in the flying fuck is all that shit supposed to mean?

If I can't be bothered to figure out the math behind something that might actually prove useful to me why the fuck would I sit and try to decipher this garbage?

It's like I'm forced to go on Jeopardy!. The answer is "FUCK YOU" and a dude runs out and punches me in the nuts. Now I'm supposed to figure out the question and the "reward" is a second dude with steel toed boots will kick me in the nuts.

Why not offer added incentive and require people to drop off their $$$ for gil in person?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Square-Enix is smart or something. It's just that the RMT are even more stupid. It's a battle of the retards and Square-Enix is, despite their best efforts, somehow winning.

Emergency Maintenance?

I'm guessing it'll be no more easy 1-40 Synergy skill ups?

UPDATE: Uhh... whatever the fuck that means.

The Behemoth Knife + Mordant 75 still gives skill ups at level 2. I think the furnaces no longer appear in a poof of purple gas though which might be the change.

I really need to get another Albatross Ring.

154 Gil Poison Potions

More proof SE hates Alchemists. From BG:
The newly introduced Elshimo Pachira Fruit will inflict a 1 damage/tick poison and last for 2 minutes. The best part is it only costs 154 gil each or 1848 gil a stack instead of 10k~ for poison potions. I tested the effects and you can still eat the fruit when you have a food on.

You can purchase the fruit at Ghemi Sinterilo who is the item vendor in the airport terminal in Kazham.
Are you cheap as hell, but don't want to look retarded when Kirin Sleepga's everyone at the start of a zerg? Eat some poisonous tropical fruit instead of those expensive ass potions.

i r teh reTurN3d!!!!111

Sorry for the title. :-P

What I've Been Up To...

I haven't really been on FFXI much in the past week or so. I updated FFXI on my PC when the update came out and on my (shitty) PS2 today. I'll need to go and see what all this newfangled Synergy stuff is about.

I haven't been on mostly because I'm a bit bored with the game. Also, partly because I've been playing Digital Devil Saga. But I finished that last night (in about 40 hours) so the "bored" thing is more to do with it than the "playing other games" thing. (Fun game, worth checking out if you haven't yet.)

LS Woes

It hasn't helped much that my LS isn't doing any events currently and hasn't for the past two or three months. I think we're supposed to be starting up events again after New Year's, but I'm pretty sure we were also supposed to start back up again in November and December too. Looks pretty bleak...

I could really use a Social LS or something for the time being. Maybe do some Nyzul Isle runs to see about getting more than Denali Feet and some new WS from there. The RNG WS would be situationally useful particularly since I mostly go the Holy Bolt spam route. Or try to rank up a bit in regular Assault.

Ebisu Update!

Since I haven't been on I obviously haven't made any progress towards Ebisu or gotten any Fishing GP. I logged on for a bit earlier and got .2 skill in about 25 minutes which isn't bad. I'll need to see about doing today's GP fishing later.

Synergy Stuff

I have read about this subject a bit on the Evil Wiki. It sounds simple enough in a convoluted not simple way. Apparently, to get to level 50 you either need to have Veteran Cooking (like me, yay!), Veteran Smithing, and Artisan Woodworking team or no skills and a buttload of Mythril Leaves.

You can also apparently deliberately fail to keep reusing your items over and over again. I'm not sure if Square-Enix intended this or not though. In regular Synthesis you can fail and lose items, but it's purely random once you're over the cap on an item, and your Synthesis attempt can't be punished with DEATH. In Synergy you can't lose your items, but you might die.

With how people completely and totally lose their shit over dying in FFXI I guess that can be viewed as a fair trade-off. To them anyway. When you've died hundreds of times like I have you kind of just get annoyed that you may have to do some walking and/or stand around for five minutes doing nothing.

What's Next...

I flagged the Synergy quest now, bought some Little Worms to get my GP fish in Oldton Movalpolos, bought some Pickaxes, and am going to head through North Gustaberg laying waste to every level 0 Worm mob in my path to get a Flint Stone for the quest.

After I go for a walk around the park for an hour.

I'd run most of the trail, but I seem to have fucked up my right hip about a week ago and running puts it at about an 8.5/10 on the pain scale. It'll be better in another week I think.

See ya then!

My fucking PS2 won't read any discs and I just got my copy of SMT: Digital Devil Saga.

Now to find out if hitting it will help or not...

NMs to Camp...

As I continue my quest for the elusive Ebisu Fishing Rod, I'm tempted to stop for a while and go camp some NMs instead. This past update introduced a bunch of nice items and I would be able to have an upgrade and sell something not-Rare/Ex off for Gugrusaurus gil.

The first isn't really going to let me sell much of anything off:But it would save me some gil on ammo leveling Ranger. It would be great to find out what the proc rate is on it. (Nobody seems to know.)

The NM pops in Fort Gheselba every hour or so and is quite weak.

Next up:These two rings make for one of the best melee TP set in the game. It's like having two Divisor Rings that work all the time. Well, after level 55 anyway.

The NMs spawn in two of the (S) zones every hour or two. Droprate is pretty bad though with the wiki listing it as ~5%. If I got them both I could sell off my Toreador's and Sniper's rings and make about 3.2 million.

Also:Basically a Life Belt +1. (Or a decently augmented Life Belt.) Kind of lower priority than the other NMs because it's really only a very small improvement.

And for MNK & PUP:They're piercing damage which makes them quite nice to have around.

And that's it pretty much!

Bastok Mines -> Nashmau

Because I'm not smart enough to find my way through the Alzadaal Undersea Ruins to Nashmau I'm thinking about moving my Homepoint to Nashmau. That makes it kind of inconvenient to get basically anywhere else, but I haven't had LS events in like three months and am mostly spending my gaming time fishing in Talacca Cove (to make gil and get Fishing skill ups).

That saves me the time of taking the ferry from Whitegate, but also makes it so I can't catch any Kalkanbaligi and maybe get a second Flat Shield. Which are quite nice since I can probably sell another for 200k.

Having just gotten a second Flat Shield as I type this, I'm not sure I want to give that up.

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

I should start an all-Relic (except me) Shantotto party... has been updated with Mini-expansion progress info. Should make finding people for the Full Moon Fountain mission a lot easier by comparison to what it was before.

Like half the people on that list all have relics. O.o

I'm smarter than Square-Enix. Which seriously isn't saying very much.

Despite being hilariously inept at finding employment, I did ace several courses in the Computer Science part of my BS in CS degree attempt. (My shit rhymes. In an Eminem sort of way. However he spells it. Fuck Eminem.)

Anyway, if you're a sorry bastard like me who failed a "write a decimal number in IEEE binary format" Class once, but motherfucking aced (high five!) Foundations of Computer Science which was all about Finite State Machines (aka the motherfucking computer in front of you) and Regular Expressions (aka...motherfucking regular expressions?), then this makes you fucking sad.Seriously, Square-Enix. "brogame" and "oosale", or whatever the fuck the second URL was that lasted about a day, can be pretty easily parsed from a /tell string with a Regular Expression. If a pathetic fuck like myself can figure out how to filter them, maybe the fucks you're paying stupid amounts of money to neglect FFXI for FFXIV could fucking spend five minutes to fucking implement a non-fucktarded chat filter?

Here's another hint. You could use Heuristics and flag trial accounts with WORldafjhksahdfkjashdfjhd names as probably fucking RMT spam cunts.

Just sayin.'

Ever Exciting Evoliths Emerge! (11/30/2009)

We're pleased to announce the Evolith System is available to all the adventurers of Vana'diel today!

Oh, wait, it's 5 hours and 30 minutes until December and this "Late November" update with Evoliths is nowhere to be seen. GG SE!

P3:FES vs. P4

I wrote up a rather long comment on Spoony's site earlier and decided to post it here as well:
P3 had an interesting desegregation of story and gameplay in how it had the player playing *only* the main character. It limited things like direct control over the other characters in battle, didn't allow you to directly make the other party members cast spells out of battle (Dia and Recarm mostly although you could request them to heal you), and you could only change a person's equipment by talking to them.

Although these things certainly make it more like the player is actually the MC immersed in the game's world, it also wasn't really that much fun. It also broke with JRPG conventions, and was not particularly liked by many gamers.

P4 changed all these things to the more expected traditional form. I think that's for the better personally, although it really didn't matter that much. It also streamlined and improved things a lot of people didn't like (square button fast travel, etc).

As for which was better, I played P4 before playing P3:FES, and have to say I liked P4 better. P3 definitely had a more "epic" story and darker setting. The Journey was interesting and challenging. The Answer was soul-crushingly difficult. The ending to both parts of P3 was pretty awesome as well.

Where I have to give P4 credit though is mostly because of the characters. It might be because you could form Social Links with everyone who joins the Investigation Team and get to know more about them, but for some reason they just really were awesome. The bad endings were genuinely sad, and the good ending was genuinely heart warming (as cheesy as that may sound). I also found the Social Links to be more interesting and better implemented in general. P4 is easier than P3 though on Normal difficulty because of changes to the battle system and because of the Social Link enhancements your teammates get though which for an SMT game is in my opinion a strike against it.

People complain about the repetition of Tartarus in P3 and point to the different dungeons in P4 as an improvement which is something I have to disagree with. The dungeons in both games were essentially just palette swaps of previous ones, and while P4 has shorter/fewer floors to climb there's really not that much difference between the two. If you don't enjoy dungeon crawling you probably won't like either game. If you enjoy it, or don't mind sitting through some, you will probably enjoy both games.

That's my take on it anyway. Atlus needs to put some more games out on something other than the DS already. :P

Also, I really need to get a DS. :P
So there you have it! P4 > P3, but both are good and you should play them.

75 Fishing!

Well, 75.1 actually. But it's effect is truncated to full digits, so that doesn't matter currently. :-P

Fast approaching 78! Now I just need for the GP fish to pick up and to get lucky with a Gugrusaurus. :-D

F#@&ing Seriously?

You need 94 of these fucking things for 1.1k Guild Points? How fucking stoned was the asshole who came up with that shit?

Spend three hours fishing to fatigue to get 1.1k GP? That's amazingly stupid.

Minor Update: The fish in question also DON'T STACK.

Also, on a mostly unrelated note, "fucktard" or "fucktarded" is a pretty widely accepted profanity contraction of "fuck" and "retard."

I'm thinking "fuckrendous" would be a pretty nice addition to the English language. It could be that I'm a cynical asshole, but I think there's lots of things that could be fairly described as "fucking horrendous" on a daily basis. Think of how much time would be saved with describing them as "fuckrendous" while giving some deserving person the finger instead!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope all my fellow US Americans enjoy their Turkey Day today/tomorrow! I'm looking forward to a day of tolerating my relatives and a delicious dinner. Hopefully, we'll actually have some leftover turkey this year.

The meal itself is going to be centered around the bird. I brined a turkey Good Eats style. It's soaking in a salty, sugary chicken broth seasoned with all-spice, rosemary, and peppercorn medley.

The stuffing isn't going to actually be stuffed. Well, not in the bird anyway, it's going to be stuffed into red bell peppers. It'll be composed of challah (Jewish bread made with egg in it so it doesn't fall apart) bread, roasted red onion, celery, and green bell pepper. Some parsley, garlic, sage, and thyme will round out the spice section in it. Stovetop can get fucked next to this stuff's level of awesomeness. The stuff will go into halved, stemmed, and seeded red bell peppers which will go into the oven. They'll probably end up cut in two for serving.

I don't know if there's going to be any cranberry. I don't personally care for the shit and who really wants to eat gelatinized fruit from a can anyway?

There will be some mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. I don't know if you're supposed to use an 'e' on the end or not and fuck anyone who cares.

Sweet potatoes will also make it into the desert with a sweet potato pie. The crust is typical pie crust, the filling is pumpkin pie spice flavored sweet potato, and the crust on top is an almond brown sugar crispy...thing. I bet it'll taste pretty good. There's also going to be several lemon sponge pies which are a family tradition recipe. Those will be lemony and rad.

And that about covers my Thanksgiving. I hope everyone else will have a nice one or have a nice regular Thursday if it's just another day where you live. Cheers!

Bonanza Ahoy?

Square-Enix is bringing out the Mog Bonanza early this year. They're going a New Years version.

The prizes are mostly similar to last time. Shadow Rings are apparently sooo rad that they're available as two grand prizes. The "Kupon" rewards are the usual Icelands Relic armors with the addition of all the Absolute Virtue drops (that are otherwise unobtainable what with Square-Enix nerfing all the ways to kill the fucking thing).

They also added some retarded to get NM drops like the piercing (or was it slashing?) hand-to-hand weapon from a Fomor NM in a CoP area and the Vilma's Ring which drops off an NM that only spawns when nobody kills the placeholder for half a day. The H2H would be more exciting if SE hadn't added these this update. Which drop off a mob that spawns in a random outdoors area every two or so hours.

I'm not sure whether I'll even bother entering this time. I've gotten absolutely nothing of value from it either of the past two. Somehow I doubt third time will be the charm.

Plus I don't really want 10 inventory spaces taken up for a few months.

The System

So, I've been doing more Fishing than ever lately: Trying to skill up to 78, get my second Ebisu item, and get 85k GP for the Key Item to flag the quest.

The second item is kind of a wild card. I could get it from my next Gugursaurus or my 500th one from now. I'm only up to 70 though, so I'm still only half the average number of fish. It'd be really nice to get it soon though.

As for the skilling up, they're coming slowly but surely:If I win a skill up Ring from Fish Ranking I could get up to the 90s pretty quickly I think.

Guild Points have been pretty sucky. Yesterday was catch 30 Cheval Salmon. Which bite on Fly Lures which Shining Trout also bite on about twice as often. I'm not about to fish halfway to fatigue for 1.2k GP and maybe 1,500 gil from NPCing Shining Trout. Today is catch 15 Elshimo Frogs. That sucks slightly less, but I still don't really care to stand around the fucking jungle for an hour for 2.3k GP. Lots of running around and lots of time to catch all the damned fish because of course you can't buy them anywhere and they're otherwise useless so nobody with half a brain would bother fishing them normally.

Enter: The System

I could instead be in Talacca Cove skilling up and making a pile of gil to buy Gugrusaurus with. Ahtapot (useless version of grimmonite), Mercanbaligi (bream), and Dil (black sole) all bite there on a Shrimp Lure.

Ahtapot go directly to one of the rat people NPCs in Nashmau. That's 700 gil with no headache.

Mercanbaligi I was making Bream Sushi with, but it's three synths per stack. I've only got 100+1 Cooking, so it's not Tier 2 HQ without support. And people flock to Squid Sushi as their default cheapo sushi (despite Bream being better usually), so the shit sells very slowly. Those are now also going to the same rat NPC, who must be wondering what the hell to do with all the fish I sell to him, for a nice 600 gil a pop.

Dil is where the only actual Cooking happens. Sole Sushi takes six synths to make a stack and is a Tier 1 HQ that sells for more than 2x the NQ. Also, despite in theory being a 1/8 or 1/16 HQ rate I've got horrible luck with it HQing. My break rate is significantly higher. There's ocassionally a fluke like above though.

The synths each make about 2.5k gil profit, not counting breaks, and move fairly quickly, so it's decent money. Between the NPC gil and the AH Sole Sushi sales I can buy about 7-10 Gugrusaurus a day.

More Fishing!

After getting my Opal Silk yesterday, I decided to try and get the other Ebisu item today!I also decided to try and get a the reward from Fish Ranking which is a 180 charge Ring that gives you a second chance for skill ups everytime you catch a fish above your level.

The target fish is this:So it was off to the Boyhada Tree with a bunch of flies as bait! With 60 flies I only managed about 10 fish.

I did get a really small one though, which is the goal, so I'm pretty happy.I think it should at least place if not get up there in the top 5. Last competition was Lik (which was why I bought a bunch not realizing it was already over, and started Ebisu instead XD) and there weren't even 20 entries. Hopefully my score of 460 is the lowest or up there.

I'm bazaaring a bunch of lowish ~100 size fish for 50k each overnight. Hopefully, somebody will buy one and I'll have money for 2.5 Gugrusaurus for Ebisu. Speaking of Ebisu...

Needs Moar Ebisu!

On the Ebisu front I'm now more than double my 0/~18 of yesterday and am 0/43. One of the Ebisu fishers who catches the fish I'm buying was nice enough to give me two for free after buying a bunch. How awesome would it have been for one of those to have had it? lol But I'm still <100 under the average number of fish, so I can't complain too much. Well, yet anyway.

I'm not going to sell anything expensive that I use to buy fish, so I'll probably slow my fish buying down and go back to Talacca Cove to skill up some more and NPC the fish there to fund Gugrusaurus purchases. Once I hit the 90s I could attempt to catch some myself, but it would probably be easier to make money elsewhere and just continue buying them.

That's it for today! Anyone else fishing, crafting, or working on a relic lately?

71.4 FIshing! Also: Holy S*%& YES!!!!!

I went to Talacca Cove tonight to do some more Fishing and got a nice .9 worth of skill ups. I netted about 50k worth of fish to NPC/make sole sushi out of.

I also spent a bunch more money on Liks and Gugrusaurus making me:
1/52 Lik
0/6 GugrusaurusI've got Opal Silk!!!!!! HOLY SHIT!!! :-D

Now to buy all the Gugrusaurus I can find and start getting Guild Points with the Fisherman's Guild so I can flag the quest at 78. XD

0/36 on Liks.

0/5 on Gugrusaurus.

Spent about 500k on all those fishies. :-P

Seriously, really?

NIN/RNG > Steely Weapon

I tried to kill one using a Shark Gun and Iron Bullets as NIN/DNC yesterday. But it depopped still very much alive before I was able to get it to 30%.

I went back as NIN/RNG later and was able to solo one. Get 150%+ TP, pop sushi, Sharpshot, Slug Shot, Barrage, shoot, Slug Shot, shoot a bit more, kill! Of course a real Ranger would probably be able to drop it with just a Slug Shot and Barrage, but it's a nice alternative for people too lazy to actually level it (still 57!).

The Shantotto expansion has been (in my opinion fairly) criticized for the artificial difficulty of NMs that only take certain types of damage. There's also the whole synthing + critical breaks thing for people who don't have crafts leveled (as well as some from people who do).

Ninja is in an odd position with the NMs in that it can deal slashing (durr, katanas), piercing (dagger), ranged (gun), and blunt damage (h2h and preferably some Waghs, Warp Cudgel is too low DPS), AND magic damage (-ton Ninjutsu). With the exception of magic damage NMs, which I killed with a bunch of people from Epic, I was able to solo all the NMs. I think I'd probably need to unlock the three :San spells that work on the particular NMs and go /RDM with HQ Staves to drop them in time. With just some INT/MAB gear it wasn't enough.

It's still a needlessly irritating and frankly stupid "quest" though. Also, sticking ranged damage-only NMs at the entrance to Ro'Maeve pretty well fucks up the Fields of Valor soloing there for most jobs. I can only imagine the fun that will be camping Shikigami Weapon with NMs you can't sleep, damage, or kill all over the place.

After wandering around the sewers under Windy collecting glowy things I'm now up to a BCNM with a bunch of Tarutaru Fomor things. If you haven't done this expansion, I assure you that no it really doesn't make any more sense in context.

After that it's some cutscenes, collecting more glowying things in a different crappy hole in the ground, and then a fight that most people are saying is ridiculously hard.

So... what do Network Administrators actually do?

I've been looking for a job lately. And it hasn't been going well. In fact, it's been going rather poorly.

The job interview from Monday resulted in a nice "Fuck you" letter in the mail today. I hope those assholes get swine flu followed by some nice Super AIDS. Bitches.

But as I look at more jobs on various job websites I find myself wondering "What the hell do Network Administrators actually do?" I mean you've got lots of user's PCs and some servers and various network devices. Once they're setup and plugged in they mostly keep working. If you're spending 8 hours a day 5 days a week at a place I can't picture it being constant pandemonium with shit breaking everywhere and the servers needing constant poking and prodding. Hide in the back and surf the Internet? Sneak out the back and go for coffee?

I'm having a hard time picturing it as anything but either insanely heavy constant work or completely mind-numbingly boring.

Anybody been in this line or work or have a friend who's told them what their day is like?

Alcohol & Seeing Triple

I was slightly wasted last night. But I logged back on to do the new expansion some more and see if being triple the legal limit makes it more tolerable. It turns out, it makes it pretty funny. Funny in a ridiculous not at all intentional way, but LOLtastic nonetheless.

I ran into three people from Epic/Oops/NeedsMoreRelics who were in Norg and running around SSG getting behind doors to snap Pankration pictures so they could get a key item to force pop some NMs in Gustav Tunnel. Makes perfect sense, right? So we all got our pictures and went to go kill the NMs.

The NMs are triple NPCs. Just three random Tenshodo guys who spam the piss out of Utsusemi: Ni to no effect for five minutes before spawning tons of wimpy clones that ran all over stabbing everyone. I switched from my MNK/WHM avatar killing combo (pro-tip: I killed all six of the fuckers and got a 10k reward instead of the 50k other people go; just do the easiest to get to three and save yourself two hours) to Scholar/Red Mage. With wimpy monsters they may not hit hard, but 10 of them hitting you for 20 damage at Hundred Fists speed you will go down quickly.

Enter stage left: Phalanx. You're now being hit for 0 damage. And you've got a 350 Stoneskin buffer. Add in a Terra's Staff and Jelly Ring and you will take no damage. Between Phalanx+Stoneskin and one Regen II nobody ever was in any danger.

Unfortunately, SCH/RDM doesn't get the AoE earth damage staff WS for some reason, so I couldn't AoE WS them. (Note to self: Bring dagger.) But with three other people there slashing and stabbing the clones they all died pretty rapidly. Since the clones are unsleepable it's also one of the rare occassions when AoE Bio II is sort of handy.

So yeah. This segment of Shantotto ended up being hilariously easy too. One step for man, one giant leap towards Dragon Pants.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but I'm thinking I'll go Movement speed +8% and MAB+4. That way I could idle and nuke in them. They won't be as good as Physical damage -4% would be for idle or as an "OH SHIT!!!" piece, but they will be good enough to stand around in most of the time.

The INT+2 MAB+4 will be better than Mahatma's Slops for damage most of the time as well which is nice.

The Difference a Day Makes

I'm doing the latest Shantotto thingy today.

I think Square-Enix really managed to put people off these things with ACP. Because it's only been 24 hours and there's very little competition for the initial fetch quests. I got a bunch of the items farmed up, synthed the five pre-synths and finally made my Enfeeblement of Blinding (or whatever it's called) about 50% of the synths HQ'd (same results as NQ), and no breaks until after the final product when I made some additional inks and boxes for the Auction House.

I farmed all the stuff up as MNK/WHM going with /WHM because the items are all adjacent to crag zones. Droprates kind of sucked, but I got all my items and a few spares quickly.

It's pretty weird walking around all these old zones that I have no reason to come to anymore. It's also kind of annoying since I forget a lot of them. :-P

I'm now doing a walk-a-thon to kill hilariously weak versions of the Prime Avatars. They have completely horrible accuracy. I don't think they even have the cap of 20% accuracy. They also don't have the -50% physical damage taken that every other avatar in the game has (I wonder if SMN PCs' pets lost it too as an update bug?) I just killed Ifrit as MNK/WHM and took 0 damage. Slow from /WHM even stuck. Leviathan was even easier. He was slowed and paralyzed all fight.

After I go and punch the crap out of Shiva I'll be ready to move on to some sort of annoying key item collection walk-a-thon and then be ready for some fight. A fight that if I lose it will have to re-do the stupid key item collection crap.

At least I get some pants for this shit. Well, and 40k that I got from selling those extra thingies I farmed this morning.

Flat Shield, "Set:" Items, Thoughts on the Version Update & More!

This humble author discovered the source of the Flat Shield. Stats:
Flat Shield
[Sub] All Races
INT+1 MND+1 MP recovered while healing +2
(I also just now figured out how the align HTML tag works.)

It looks like a really nice shield from 30-51 and the elemental staves. Combine it with the Rare/Ex hMP+ Club from West Sarutabaruta for /healing and an INT/MND+ Club for nukes/cures. Best of all, it's source isn't something most people can do. (It's a level 100 Fish that you need a Lu Shang's Rod to catch.)

"Set:" Items!

There's also a number of "Set:" items that actually look really nice. The first is this pair:
Helenus's Earring [Rare][Ex]
LV60 All Jobs
Set: "Magic Atk. Bonus"+5
Magic Accuracy+5

Cass. Earring [Rare][Ex]
LV60 All Jobs
Set: "Magic Atk. Bonus"+5
Magic Accuracy+5
These two are sisters or something in Greek mythology. There's no info on where they come from yet, but it's probably safe to assume that they're a pair.

While Novio (MAB+7) and Static (Magic Burst damage+5%) are still best for Magic Bursts, which no one uses anymore, and Novio and Moldavite (MAB+5) are best for free nuke damage, on anything remotely hard the Magic Accuracy +5 will probably trump them in unresisted damage over time.

It could also be a good pair to get for Dark Magic skill and magical Blue Magic.

The next are two juicy melee rings:
Lava's Ring [Rare][Ex]
[Finger] All Races
+5 +5 +5 +5 Set: DEF:+6 Accuracy+12 Attack+6
LV 55 All Jobs

Kusha's Ring [Rare][Ex]
[Finger] All Races
+5 +5 +5 +5 Set: DEF:+6 Accuracy+12 Attack+6
LV 55 All Jobs
These two are named after brothers in Hindu mythology, so it's safe to assume they're probably a set. This is better than two Sniper's/Woodsman Rings. It's also potentially free which makes it better than spending 6 million gil on two Toreador's Rings or Sniper's +1's.

You'd basically have two Divisor Rings which work 100% of the time post-55. (Accuracy +6, Attack +3).

But what about something for the tanking job types? Well, PLD/NIN (all people use) would benefit from the preceding two Acc/Att+ rings, but they get some tank-specific love too:
Nasatya's Ring [Rare][Ex]
[Finger] All Races
Physical damage taken -1% Set: HP+50 MP+50
LV 55 All Jobs

Dasra's Ring [Rare][Ex]
[Finger] All Races
Magic damage taken -1% Set: HP+50 MP+50
LV 55 All Jobs
-1% damage taken and HP+50 & MP+50. Not bad at all. There's better stuff you could use, but there has been for all of these so far.

Rangers aren't left out either:
Altdorf's Earring [Rare][Ex]
[Ear] All Races
Ranged Accuracy+1 Set: AGI+8
LV 60 All Jobs

Wilhelm's Earring [Rare][Ex]
[Ear] All Races
Ranged Attack+1 Set: AGI+8
LV 60 All Jobs
These two are...german...let's say brothers. I don't feel like checking Wikipedia yet again. :-P

This beats out Drone Earrings x2, but you'd still probably want Triumph Earrings for WS. They probably won't cost you 1.5 million gil though, so I kind of like these better. You can also use them about 12 levels sooner.

So there's a little bit of "Set:" loving for everyone. How useful they'll end up being will probably be determined by how you get them. If it's from Moblin Maze Mongers, then nobody will end up getting them because no one does MMM because MMM IS FUCKING LAME.

Thoughts on the Version Update

I've gotta say I'm underwhelmed. I logged in and did some fishing yesterday and didn't see anything new.

Well, I traded in two new fish to Zaldon for the Inside the Belly quest, but I'm not counting that. (Also, if you're on Hades go buy my overpriced Flat Shield for 300k :P)

I could try to start the Shantotto thing, but I hear it's pretty fucked. (Here, here, here, etc.) There's crafting that has to be done by the player in it too which is pissing people off. I haven't attempted it, but having nearly all my crafts to 60 I wouldn't anticipate problems.

If these synths are "different" in that you can do them at any level with the same chance of success/failure and skill up to at least 60 they could be potentially pretty awesome. The only reason my Smithing and Goldsmithing aren't 60 yet is because it's going to cost me 1-2 million gil to cap them.

New Inside the Belly Fish?

There's been some updates to the Wiki as people try new fish and find ones that work. There's also this odd excerpt listing of "new items" from that shows these:
This crustacean can be found all over Vana'diel.
Dark Bass
This freshwater fish lives in lakes and marshes across Vana'diel.
This ornery freshwater fish lives in the rivers of Mindartia.
Black Eel
This freshwater fish lives in the rivers of Gustaberg.
Moat Carp
This freshwater fish is found in lakes and marshes all over Vana'diel.
Copper Frog
This amphibian is common in marshes and lakes across Quon.
Shining Trout
This freshwater fish lives in the clear streams to the north of Quon.
Bastore Sardine
This saltwater fish lives in the coastal waters of the Bastore Sea.
This saltwater fish can be found all over the southern seas.
Tiger Cod
This saltwater fish lives primarily in the Sea of Shu'Meyo.
Ogre Eel
This saltwater fish lives in the reefs along the Bastore Sea coast.
Nosteau Herring
These saltwater fish can be found all over the northern seas.
Gold Lobster
An arthropod found on the Bastore sea floor.
These large saltwater fish are common in the coastal waters near Mindartia.
Giant Catfish
This giant freshwater fish lives in the lakes and marshes of Quon.
Giant Donko
A giant freshwater fish found in the lakes of Zepwell Island.
This giant freshwater fish lives in the lakes and marshes of Mindartia.
This saltwater fish inhabits the reefs of the Arrapago Islands. Its fins are extremely poisonous.
Gigant Octopus
This gargantuan cephalopod makes its home beneath the boulders that litter the floor of the Bastore Sea.
Veydal Wrasse
This enormous saltwater fish is named after a legendary admiral.
Gugru Tuna
Schools of these saltwater fish can be seen swimming the southern sea currents.
Bhefhel Marlin
This giant saltwater fish can be found in the Bhefhel Gulf. Also known as the "Bhefhel Demon."
This rarely seen giant saltwater fish has teeth as sharp as knives.
This enormous saltwater fish has a swordlike tusk growing from its head.
Three-eyed Fish
A rarely seen giant saltwater fish with three eyes.
These are all OLD pre-existing fish. I'm curious if their .DATs got bumped to new numbers or something. Or if these are some of the new fish that can be traded in.

Some of them definitely can be traded in, like Bladefish for instance, and a few were known to be able to be traded before this update. But is the guy taking Crayfish now? That's like a level 3 cap fish. Will people be able to get Onion Swords or something from them?

It's something I'll definitely have to check out.

But really if Fishing is the most interesting thing about this update to me...I think it's fair to say this one was pretty lame.

70 Fishing!

I did some more fishing in Talacca Cove last night and dinged into 70! I got another .5 before logging for the night too.

NPCing the Mercanbaligi and Ahtapots and turning the Dils into Sole Sushi is netting me ~100k/day and I'm only fishing about halfway to the Fishing fatigue cap.

Sole Sushi is supposed to be a Tier 1 synth, but I've had horrible luck with HQing. I've broken twice as many synths as I've HQ'd. It still nets me about 2.5k profit per synth though so I can't complain.

I have to decide if I want to use the money to buy up Liks and Gugrusaurus for an Ebisu Rod or save up the gil for something like a second Toreador's Ring or Cuculain's Mantle. (Of course if I can get Accuracy+ on my Amemet +1 from the stuff in this coming update, then I won't need the mantle.)

0/14 on Liks.

And I got my Fishing up to a very sexy 69.5 last night.

...Why are there no crystals on the AH?

There's less than 100 total listed items under crystals on Hades right now.

There's literally 0 Light crystal stacks.

There's 4 Ice crystal stacks.

There's 2 Lightning crystal stacks.

There's 6 stacks of Earth crystals. Which are what I need to make all these Dil I fished up into sushi. Um...what the fuck? I'm not about to go farm the fucking things myself, ya know.

Is this RMT doing something weird? What's going on here? >.>

Stuff I'd like to buy

Since life is nothing without disappointment, I'll go out on a limb and assume that I get hired after a job interview on Monday. The money isn't great, but it beats the hell out of having no money.

My crap is old and dilapidated:So, I've been thinking about crap to buy before I start saving money for more long term things:

1.) Nintendo DS

I may very well be able to play a handheld (or toy around with a cellphone or whatever) for much of the work day. So it only makes sense to start spending money to make making more money more enjoyable.

There's a buttload (technical term) of RPGs on the DS I'd like to play.

And Yoshi's Island.

Yoshi's Island fucking rocks!

1.a.) A new MegaTen game!

I finished Persona 3 and now I have no soulcrushingly difficult JRPGs to play. I'm thinking Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. They look interesting and the only other thing Atlus has on PS2 is the Devil Summoner series games that have Colon Cancer.

2.) New computer stuff!

I'm definitely upgrading from my 8 year old setup. A Core i5 looks like it would serve me well. But I'm kind of tempted to go to an intermediary Core 2 Duo chip with a motherboard with HDMI output first. Why? Because I'd really like to get a Home Theatre PC thing going which brings me to the next item.

3.) A TV!

My current one I need to beat on to make it stop being staticy and shitty and work properly. Something in the range of 32" that looks nice would be a tremendous improvement.

And since I'd have a PC around that can output to HDMI I could enjoy some big screen PC gaming. As well as watch Bluray movies on it or whatever.

4.) This will take a while...

After that stuff's out of the way, it's time to save up quite a bit of money and get a decent place. Assuming I get hired, I'm figuring it'll take about a month and a half to get to this point. Which isn't bad at all.

I can only imagine how happy I'd be if I had found a well paying job. :-P just got even more useful!

And they didn't even do anything! Square-Enix announced some more info on the "Synergy" thing they're adding in a second (late November) update.

Because you'll apparently need certain synthesis skill levels in certain synergy recipes, the page for your own LS member's crafts just got waaaay more handy. Being able to search for crafters on there will also probablly be more useful than ever as well.

I'm kind of tempted to hurry and finish leveling my Goldsmithing (47) and Smithing (50) to 60 in case they end up being useful as well.

Under the "Synergy Skill" section it kind of sounds like Square-Enix is making the contract synthesis that some people do and the "synth for a friend" thing sort of more official. Like how people used to organize their own in-game weddings and Square-Enix eventually got around to offerring it as an actual service with signed Rare/Ex rings and fireworks.

As for the acutal "synergy" how it works with the Synergy Furnaces in towns is explained in "Synergizing via a Communal Furnace." From the sound of it after getting a key item you'll be eligible to form a party with people with different synthesis skills, get in line to use the synergy furnace in town, get a sufficient amount of "fewell" from the NPC in exchange for gil, and then drop in your ingredients. Only the person who got in line for the furnace can add ingredients or obtain the results.

Then there's some vague process where you need to operate the furnace and make sure it does not explode. You'd think specifics would be good here. What with the fiery death and all. It's still up in the air how it works at the moment though. Elemental balances and whatnot.

Everyone else who participates besides the person who supplied the items and got the resultant products gets...ash. Yes, "cinder", is the reward. You'll be able to trade them in for things that make you better at Synergy. Kind of circular rewards/reasoning there, but it will probably be Synergy skill +1 equipment like there is for the guilds (hats/glasses, aprons, mog house furnishings, etc). I'm betting you'll only be able to trade in a few per real life day like guild points.

Fiery death and destruction and customizable augments. I get the feeling that "Synergy" will actually be pretty popular. At least initially like Pankration. Whether it stays popular will depend on whether or not you can actually get good equipment from doing it.

If you can watch noobs blowing up Synergy Furnaces in the middle of town and die it'll at least be popular as a spectator sport. Evil people everywhere approve of Synergy.

What will be broken in the coming Version Update

As an aspiring computer scientist of mediocre credentials, I, evilpaul, shall now tell you, all three of my readers, what Square-Enix will be breaking soon in your immediate FFXI futures.

1) The new ranged attack "efficiency" messages will cause Xbox 360 users to disconnect from the game.

We've seen it before with Aura Steal for great lulz. We'll see it again for ranged attacks. There will be many BG threads about someone on Lakshmi, or another server that I don't think there's actual real life people playing on, who post about Fafnir MPKs because their Aegis PLD was forcibly d/c'd repeatedly until the disreputable HNMLS stole it finally.

2) Ready, the new BST JA, is broken. You can use certain TP moves over and over infinitely until you get bored and do something else. If this includes 1000 Needles it will be used to kill AV and Starcade will Rage Quit over it.

3) Dancer's new Job Trait, "Conserve TP" which is learned at level 40, causes Waltzes to occasionally use less TP activates 100% of the time. Lulz of epic levels ensue as people realize on forums everywhere that Dancers being massively overpowered healers, albeit temporarily, doesn't affect game balance. Square-Enix responds by nerfing Conserve TP to such a degree that stacking equipment with it in every slot is still worthless. So everyone still considers Dancer the 2004 Dragoon of 2009.

4) Evolith NMs spawn claimed to third-parties who were checking the ??? at the time someone else spawned it. It happened with Kirin. It will happen with a mandragora of doom in East Sarutabaruta. And it will be pretty funny.

5) Moblin Maze Mongers fishing things prevents people from getting Fishing skill ups. Thanks to the addition of something involving Fishing with MMM you won't be able to level Fishing.

You heard it here first, folks!

Minor Update: And with the news on POL today, I'm predicting people will cause Spike Flails at Tiamat using field summoned Synergy Furnaces.

Wow, that's actually not stupid.

Square-Enix is letting people pick their own augments, which still seem to be obtained randomly, and add several to pieces of equipment and remove them later if they choose to.

Assuming these "Evolith" things don't suck too much to obtain that's actually pretty cool.

I got the AIDS, fellas!!!

No, I didn't actually get the AIDS, but I did get my Fishing to level 68!

Now I need to get a Bladefish for the guild to get ranked up or just continue until I'm close to 70 and then get a Bladefish. A meatball outside Windy will get a Bladefish though, so I'm tempted to just mail my Lu's to my mule, buy some meatballs from the guild, and have at it.

Also, my condolences to anyone who actually did get the AIDS. This world sucks enough without an imminent GAME OVER screen.

Sweet! I still don't have any need/desire to get the lolMoogle Expansion!

Square-Enix is releasing some sort of cape that teleports everyone in a party to the location of the person with lead. From the sounds of it, you just enter a code or something and it'll be in your Delivery Box (or maybe from the Lower Jeuno coffer).

Conspicuously absent is that you can't use it in any of the WotG or ToAU areas. I guess that's to prevent Sandworm/Ixion abuse and to keep people from cheesing their way to ZNMs islets and/or ToAU HNMs (Khim, Cerb, lolHydra, etc).

The only non-stupid use for this:

Getting to the ENM in Uleguerand Range.

Level your alternate character's mule to Lv.30, plus enough buffer EXP to still be level 30 with Raise 1, and park it on the ledge.

Well, honestly it's getting to several of the ENMs. It works in Attohwa Chasm too, so park a mule up top there with the cape. That ENM is better than Brothers since you can get a Hagun (or two) out of the treasure crate.

Getting to EXP camps?

If Square-Enix released this to make getting to an EXP camp easier it's pretty retarded. People don't level in Zilart areas anymore. And the 40 hour cooldown on it makes it pretty useless for that.

What it all means...

If you bought all three mini-expansions and have a small group to ENM with: Level some mules and park 'em at the appropriate spots.

If you didn't buy all three and/or don't have a few friends to ENM with. You shouldn't care about this.

Now, we wait...

With the Version Update only 7 days away I think we've heard most of the news we're going to about it. Maybe, although I doubt it personally, an avatar announced the day of the update.

Square-Enix always saves any "potentially severe changes to the game's economy" type things for the day of as well. I'm pretty sure they don't have any such changes planned.

I'll try to get around to writing a speculative "What they broke with this update" before the 9th to see how much I guess correctly this time.

Square-Enix Bares All

Well, as much as they had been before anyway. The Shantotto Augments (stolen from Eldelphia):
Click for fullsize/readable picture.

I've gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised. Also a little bit confused. There's augments available that people were saying would never happen (like Movement speed+%).

Magic critical hit damage if you have Magic critical hit+% gear which will give you MAB+10 some small percentage of the time you get an extra 1 MAB that small percentage of the time? I'm not sure I follow the usefulness of this. Even if it was a pure +10% damage on magic critical hits they're so rare even with all the gear/augments you'd probably be better off with Mahatma's Slops.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure if I get it I'd go with Physical Damage taken-4% and Movement speed+8%. I'm not sure if I'd go with the mage pants or the light melee one. Having an "OH SHIT!!!" piece that also is good for running away is pretty awesome. I'm a little unsure which to get though.

Alternative Setups

There's obviously quite a few reasonable combinations here...

There's the pretty decent Haste+3% and Accuracy+7 combo which is about as good as Homam Legs or Byakko's Haidate and will probably be much easier to get for TPing. Melee Redmages should go with this if they can't leave their Enspell II's in the Mog House.

For NIN/DRK tanking Physical damage taken-4% and HP+25 Enmity+4 (or possibly Haste+3%) would be pretty good.

For PLD/NIN tanking, the tanking style people actually use, Haste+3% and HP+25 Enmity+4 would be a pretty easily obtained Homam replacement.

A situational nuking piece with Magic Atk. Bonus+4 and Magic Burst damage+10% would help to make sure you pull hate and die if you weren't already as Black Mage.

Rangers could go with Ranged Accuracy+7 and "Barrage"+1 for (presumably) an extra shot on Barrage which when combined with AF hands would let you fire up to eight shots on a Barrage. (Which with capped accuracy would only land ~66% of the time.)

Pet jobs have their usual plethora of augments...I can't bring myself to care about them like usual though.

For White Mage and healing/supporting Scholars/Red Mages... For cures MP+25 Enmity-4 and Cure potency+5% looks pretty nice. For static buffs like Protect/Shell, Haste (for non-WHMs anyway), Accension+Blink/Aquaveil, etc. either MP+25 Enmity-4, Conserve TP+5, and/or Haste+3%. You generate slightly less Enmity, maybe proc Conserve MP, and have reduced recasts (well two of those things).

The End?

That's about it as far as popular possibilities I see for the Shantotto reward armor. I think that Movement speed+8% will probably end up being the most popular of the augments. Which ones people pick would be a pretty good idea for the next Vanadiel Census.

Next Update Bug Predictions!

I'm thinking about and plan on writing up a post about what bugs Square-Enix will introduce with the update. Kimiko has this nice summary of most of the older POL news since the last update.

Nada 'Til All Saint's Day

I've got no LS events until November 1st.

i r teh bored.

I'll probably have to actually go and level Ranger or something. I hear the update is coming on the 12th, so I could probably hit 75 pretty easy before then if I tried.

Also, it's not related to FFXI, but the weather here (right outside Philly) has been crap lately. Raining and shitty out ~50% of the time for the past two weeks. Just complainin.'

Things Evilpaul Likes.

This is one of them.

A Week of Star Ocean

I've never finished a Star Ocean game.

I've got Star Ocean Second Story on the PSX. I got to the last battle in it, got my ass kicked, and put it down never to try it again. I didn't even remember that it apparently has awesomely terrible voice acting (mentioned in reviews of its PSP remake).

I've played a bit of the *cough* first Star Ocean on *cough* SNES in *cough* English. Ahem. My do I cough a lot.

And I've got the PS2 third SO title, SO: 'Til the End of Time.

So, why not have a Week of Star Ocean™ I thought? Where I'll play and complete all three games in seven days or less!

I hope they aren't too long... I don't want to pull a sad Korean kid thing and die playing StarCraft. Well, in my case Star Ocean. lol

DO NOT LIKE Pt. 2: BG Edition

This post, being part two of DO NOT LIKE. will be amazingly disappointing and a complete, pathetic fucking failure like the Job Adjustments Part II is.

I posted on BG's Update Failure Thread. If you're reading this from work, you're probably new to The Pie Blog™ or your Network Administrator is incompetent and hasn't blocked it yet. If that post doesn't get BG added to your work's blacklist, I'm not sure what will. No porn, obviously, but I'm a bit of a potty mouth.

Anyway, go catch up on the thread with me.

Square-Enix announced the Summoner and Beastmaster changes today.

They added the "aura" effects that dozens of people have suggested for years now to Summoner.

Specifically, pop the JA and you get one of these while you have the matching avatar out:

Is this supposed to seem useful? Because it kind of really doesn't.

You can leave Diabolos out... standing around... generally not doing anything useful (like you can now)... with Refresh?! You probably still won't have free Diabolos. You won't be able to rest as Summoner. But people nearby will have a Refresh effect similar to the COR roll.

So maybe with a Scholar giving you Darkness weather and the Relic Horn (never seen one drop in several years Dynamis personally) you could justify having a Summoner AFK with Diabolos out to Refresh your BLM x4 + SCH party?

Meh. Whatever. Maybe somebody else will figure out what amazing potential this has. I sure won't. I'll look at BG and the SMN forums later.

You BSTs get to pick an ability from a list instead of using Sic and getting Bubble Curtain. And there's 2 min cooldown charges that you can store up 3 of. Presumably, the good pet special attacks will use more of them. Judging from this picture though:

I'm not so sure. Maybe Square-Enix has some unique insight, but I don't see why you would value those special attacks in that order.

They admit they have no idea what they're doing though.
We will continue to observe the beastmaster job following the release of the November version update, and as necessary, make adjustments to special abilities and calling items for each pet.
So, they'll presumably change it around 4 or 6 months or however far away the next update will be.

Overall Update Thus Far...

It's no wonder people are leaving the game in droves or just not logging on anymore. These less frequent updates are less interesting than ever.

New Wings of the Goddess Quests/Missions? Great. Maybe if I could find people to kill some NM in Jugner Forest from the Missions/Quests from months ago and then find more people to do these new ones I'll be really excited.

Also, maybe we could wrap up WotG already? It's been what? Going on two years now since it was released? ~3 hours of WotG content released a year is kind of fucking absurd. Yeah, the cutscenes are pretty. They fucking damn well better be if it takes four months to make three of them. The only time-consuming thing in WotG is getting ranked up in Campaign medals and trying to find help for the missions/quests.

I still haven't gone to Xarcabard [S]. I still know of no reason to. Is there anything there besides death from above tentacle rape and dragons?

Making trivial changes that people have been asking for for years to Summoner and Beastmaster and adding things to Ranger that should have been there since the 2007-ish nerf if not earlier...Yay.

I get it, Square-Enix, you're working on FF14. But doing a thoroughly shitty job with FF11 for the better part of two years now doesn't excite me for whatever you're doing next.
