Lost in Translation?

It occurs to me that much of what is passing for FFXI news these days before the past two week long "We're not dead yet!" Update teaser extravaganza started was "FFXI is dying." And it's been an up and down, good and bad, awesome/cool and lame/stupid kind of ride since then.

This has been largely because of the inconsistent translations to English and other languages and how vague or ambiguous they are in general. Elmer the Pointy of JPButton.com and PUP Guard skill up fame has an interesting new podcast on Petfood Alpha about this.

The English translation about equipment augmentation has "valor" in the flowery text making it seem as though Fields of Valor is how you get Augments. Is it? Nobody knows. (I am still amused that it took about 10 pages on BG before people figured out what "malmage" was.)

As you might have gathered from my last post, I'm more than a little miffed about how the Mog Satchel is obtained. Posters over on BG noticed something potentially even more annoying than the bundling of the Satchel with the Security Token though: You may have to use the Token to have access to your Mog Satchel. The wording is rather ambiguous. Which if it is correct is even more assinine than I'd originally thought.

They also talk about the English translator's love for alliteration.

It's interesting, go listen.
